Completed in 1886, the Iowa State Capitol is the third state capitol and the second located in Des Moines. It is the only five-domed capitol in the country. The gold leaf covering the golden dome is so thin that 250,000 sheets pressed together would measure only one inch thick. The tree on the left is perfectly hiding the large crane and scaffolding that’s covering about half of the building for their current restoration project.
